Design for manufacture

Industrial Design

This project was completed in 2003 for Martel Instruments. The work shown here is a refresh of that earlier project. A few concepts were created at the initial stage in sketch and illustration form. The client selected one to go forward for development and design for manufacture. Soft foam models were made along with detailed 2D and 3D CAD models.

We supported them by sourcing a suitable tool maker, who also moulded these parts. We worked with the tool maker during the tool suite build programme.

Trial parts were produced within six months of the first meeting with the client. The tool build and manufacture were completed on schedule. This product helped the manufacturer to secure it's biggest ever single order.

This project was done while employed at the Centre for Design Research at Northumbria University. The following team members who also contributed to the project;

David O'Leary - Industrial Design, Project Management, Client Liaison, Supplier Liaison
Paul Redhead - Mechanical Engineering / CAD
Dr Kevin Hilton - Mechanical Engineering / CAD
Patrick Douloubakis - Design Intern

The original CAD model by the fantastic team at Octo Product Development Ltd, now Octo Design Ltd.
